Located at Kilifi Creek, just 1.9 mi outside of town and surrounded by a community forest, Distant Relatives Ecolodge and Backpackers features a secluded beach area, a restaurant and outdoor pool.
The lodge offers different accommodations types, ranging from family and double rooms to beds in a dormitory or safari tents. The spacious rooms feature custom made furniture and shelving. The waterproof tents feature a bed-side table and solar lights.
Distant Relatives offers a communal kitchen. Meals can also be ordered from the restaurant and include vegetarian options. Cocktails and refreshments can be enjoyed at the bar. The lodge also offers regular live music events.
Facilities at the lodge include outdoor bamboo showers, a private jetty, a library and a tour desk.
An array of activities can be enjoyed on site or in the surroundings, including cycling, hiking, volleyball, sailing and darts. Visits to the nearby Fumbene village can be arranged.
Distant Relatives is 28 mi from Malindi Airport and 31 mi from Mombasa Airport. Airport shuttles can be arranged for a fee.

+: Nice greenery surrounding
-: The furniture was poorly kept in the rooms and in common area… seat cushions had feces on them from birds and unknown. Looks like they haven’t washed the cushions or don’t wash them regularly. I watch as a monkey poo’d on cushion, I informed the staff, he grabbed the poo with tissue and did no sanitation of cushion after. Ripped and torn, mosquitos net had tears and did not fit bed well… bugs still crawled on me at night. I am sure they can fumigate the rooms to prevent so many bugs and ants. I did not know the toilet in my room was compost and THIS should have been shared in advance. Even for a budget I feel the upkeep can be way better. Walked to the beach, there are no setups for guest to relax, they should and can do better.

+: Out of everywhere in the world, this was my favorite hostel ever! Meant to stay 4 nights and stayed 2 weeks and didn’t want to leave. The property is HUGE and so beautiful. They were constantly cleaning and all the facilities were well maintained. The staff, especially Beth, Brian and George were incredible. There’s hostel pets we fell in love with as well. Can cook there too! Just beware monkeys will enter the dorm rooms constantly! So don’t bring food in there. Couldn’t recommend enough.
-: The kitchen could definitely use more kitchenware. No microwave, and only one knife. But more importantly the thing they desperately need to change is the pillows. Every single one is full of mold, both in dorms and outside. Also, sadly the people on the beach are very pushy with asking for money which took away from the beach experience, not hostels fault though. Still recommend 100%.

+: great spot with good facilities. huge compound with a short walk to the creek. Food was average and drinks were a little overpriced for a backpackers lodge but overall satisfied.

+: Very green with many trees, pool area is fantastic, beautiful view from deck, love the permaculture integration and social inclusiveness - everyone welcome, delicious food, variety of activities on offer - we loved the sunset dhow trip and swim, great staff - welcoming and helpful
