+: Spacious bungalows tucked into beautiful thriving gardens - a cultivated jungle immersion. Comfy beds, good mosquito netting, fridge, AC. Staff went over and above to please, be of assistance, especially Lucy at the front desk. Manager Hajji checking in, available for questions without being intrusive. Amazing history of the Sultan’s Chuini palace ruins (on the grounds), the inlet and local fishing development, etc. Food in restaurant good, and varied enough, but basic. The pool, bar, and lounger area overlooking the beach is magical, especially at sunset, well-maintained, and under constant security watch. Had a decent massage at a great price by two very fun matronly ladies from the village who sang and danced me in and out - and insisted on doing a very businesslike 4-hand massage for the $30 price. All in all an authentic, genuine experience - a well-conceived, well-designed, well-executed ecolodge in a beautiful setting. Come for what it is, and professes to be. Very good value for the money, and a more “real” window into all that is Zanzibar — as great as the regular beach resorts are in their own way. Try them both!
-: This is a true ecolodge, which is clear in the online info. Yes, of course there are forest sounds, bugs, and lizards — some of which may find their way into your room. I had no actual problems other than some mosquitoes - and you WANT those lizards around, tho it can be unnerving at first to see one on your wall. (BYW those are not “fire ants” - as one reviewer claimed - living their lives by the pool, at the edge of the jungle. Just large red ants going about their business, not bothering anyone.)There is some noise off and on from the boat-building activity in the neighboring inlet - mostly hammering, the occasional buzz of a chain-saw. Can’t really hear it from the hotel’s beach area, bordering the open sea. But can be heard from the restaurant area when active (at low tide). Just blends in and goes away if you absorb as part of the context - or could be an irritant if you’re sensitive to that. I couldn’t discern any hot water when I tried, and water pressure was low. Could only get (moderate to weak) internet in main loungerestaurant. Breakfast ok, not memorable, but surprisingly limited fruit & fresh juice selection. There was no safe in the room, which was my only real complaint.

+: Whilst there are a number of little things that could be done to improve the experience, it is certainly somewhere I’d consider coming back to.It is about 30 -40 minutes from Stone Town, the last ten minutes on a dirt track, but sign posted from the main road (if you are in a taxiUber). This last bit can get muddy in wet season. The restaurant view is of a creek and boat workshop, but the beach and pool view is idyllic - the photos on booking dot com are accurate. The staff are very attentive and proud of the establishment.Food is simple but well prepared and tasty, they ask you to order at leat an hour ahead. There is no alternative restaurant close by. Breakfast (included) is a buffet with eggs to order, perfectly adequate. The room was basic but very clean, well protected from mosquitos (with nets on the beds and windows) and plenty of power points. The bathroom was surprisingly modern and very clean. The shower is outside with a privacy screen, plenty of hot water if you remember to turn it on. Each cabin s sufficiently isolated and surrounded by vegetation so that privacy is guaranteed , although the are ‘semi detached’ - we had no neighbours during our stay. If travelling as a family this means you can effectively have adjoining rooms.Rooms are air conditioned and quiet. Noting that Mangrove Lodge is significantly cheaper than a lot of other hotelsresorts on the island, it is certainly worth consideration
-: Mosquitoes were a real issues in the dining area (that also has a relaxing area) and the ‘chill’ zone. Bring repellant. the hotel could consider mosquito coils at meal times. Notably, Wi-Fi is only available in public areas. One point to note is that any card payment, debit or credit, incurs a 5% surcharge.Airport shuttle is a little expensive at $40, but there is little option.
